Our favourite things to do in Switzerland
Explore
Switzerland is a skier’s delight, and even in the pleasant summer climate, there’s an opportunity to ski if you travel high enough. For those not on the piste, the Swiss have fabulous carnivals, stylish resorts, sophisticated cities and around 20,000 miles of rivers (and lots of lakes) to explore. Hiking, biking and car are great ways to move around, but if you want to be one-up, balloon rides provide an unequalled way to rise above it all.
Feel Switzerland
We’ll come clean; Switzerland is a very tidy country. Though the mountains’ snow-capped peaks are Europe’s spectacular showpiece, there’s plenty going on at ground level. Sparkling lakes, flower-strewn meadows, castles, churches and pretty villages with window boxes ablaze with colour. The mountains can be explored by car, on foot or by the mountain railways and cable cars which provide unforgettable rides to the summits.
Food & drink
The cereal killer muesli originated here, but don’t let that put you off. Swiss cuisine has French, German and Italian influences. Rosti potatoes, spicy sausages and veal are munch-loved, and fresh fish can be found on most menus. Cheeses include Emmental and Gruyére, ingredients in the ubiquitous fondue. Willisauer Kirsch is the ideal digestif after a rich meal. Did you know, this strong spirit, made from Morello cherries, is the only acceptable alcoholic ingredient in Black Forest Gateaux?
